Bishop Ough offers a word from the Council of Bishops |

UMM observance |
What a day! It began with an inspirational worship service which included a combined seminary choir (Boston U. Theological School, Candler School of Theology - Emory U., and Perkins School of Theology - SMU) and inspired preaching from Bishop Ivan Abrahams, leader of the World Methodist Council.
The business of the morning included recognition of the many churches with whom the UMC is engaged in ecumenical activity. Bishop Ough, the UMC Council of Bishops president, brought a message from the bishops that was intended to assure the GC that schism was not on the agenda and that the bishops would act only as presiders of the church. Later, an appeal was made to the bishops to enter into a period of reflection and to return to the GC ready to actually lead the church.
The afternoon though was filled with contention and angst as motions, amendments, floor protests, and petitions on a wide-range of issue were acted upon. Pastor Charles was volunteering in the prayer center and so missed the excitement. But based on comments overheard in the hallways, the bishops attempt at placating the GC appealed to no one.
