A Saturday night message from Bishop Karen Oliveto

I just arrived home from Yellowstone Annual Conference and am ready to sink into some Sabbath before getting ready for Rocky Mountain Annual Conference. Right now, it is time to pray for the clergy and laity of this wonderful Mountain Sky Area. Sunday is coming! Time to prepare our hearts to receive what God might be asking of us.

A year ago this night, Robin and I were in deep discernment. Did I feel a call to the episcopacy? Did I have the gifts and graces needed for the UMC at this time? The questions alone brought up so much fear that it was hard to listen for God's voice. Then, Robin quoted scripture, "Perfect love casts out all fear." And with that, a Yes began to bubble up within me unencumbered by fear. We both looked at each other with eyes wide and acknowledged that indeed God was calling.

The next morning we got up for church and heard the news: The Pulse nightclub in Orlando had been the scene of a mass shooting. 43 people were killed and 58 injured, mainly latinx lgbtq people. Instead of fear resurfacing, God's voice kept calling.

Ever since that day, the Holy Spirit has been powerfully present in my life, in a way I have never experienced before. I never would have dreamed a year ago that I would call the Mountain Sky Area my home and get to know an entire region of churches. Together, we are dreaming anew what it means to be church.

Where is God showing up in your life? Are you able to hear the voice of God? Can you let go of fear and uncertainty to follow the Spirit, wherever it may lead? God needs you, dear One. We need you. In ways you might not even perceive. The Spirit is waiting for you. And so are we.

Blessings,
Bishop Karen
