There they are, on the seventh page of the United Methodist Hymnal,
“Directions for Singing” from John Wesley, the co-founder of Methodism:
“Sing all… Sing lustily and with good courage… Sing in time… Above
all, sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing… So
shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve here, and reward you
when he cometh in the clouds of heaven.”
Rewards in heaven? Sounds like a good enough reason to sing in a church choir.
