Devotional for December 7

King of Kings

The word ‘King’ is a man-made authority designation. Added to Emperor, Czar, Pharaoh, Fuhrer, etc, the title of ‘King’ is bestowed  on a particular man as acknowledgement of his authority over a defined geographic area, religion, or tribe. A just and benevolent King may be the preference of the ruled, but not every man who claimed  the title ‘King’ was just or benevolent.

Historically, a ‘King’ makes the rules by which his subjects must live. He leads armies to protect, or enrich, his subjects. His power dies with him. His title ‘King’ passes to another.

Jesus Christ is, was, and always will be King of Kings. By this designation, we recognizes that Christ’s authority is without limit or bounds. We acknowledge Christ’s essence is not limited by geography, not even by the known universe.

Unlike most historical ‘Kings’, who bedecked themselves with jewels and resided in great  palaces,  Christ chose a human presence which was humble, and devoid of adornments, physical comforts and titles. One of His lessons to us.

Referring to Jesus as the ‘King of Kings’ is one of many ways by which we acknowledge that He reigns above ALL creation, including all human beings, forever, without beginning, limit, or end.
