Trunk or Treat 2018

Jumping into Halloween
Amber is ready with her helpers
Amanda is ready on the yellow brick road
Flocking around Carol Gragg's hospitality tent
Bob had fun tonight!

Thanks to Pastor Charles, Dean & joey Diers, Bob Edgar, Carol Gragg, Amanda Heremes, Amber Mcclay-Schulte, Donna Lewis, Don & Mary Nelson, Marcia Prather, & Vickie Vernon for taking part in tonight’s fabulous Trunk or Treat at the church.

Nearly 200 trick-or-treaters came through the parking lot to take part in our Teal Pumpkin extravaganza!

Reformation Day

While the world may focus on trick or treat today, the church pauses to remember the beginning of the Protestant Reformation begun on this date in 1517.

 A Reformation Day Blessing
Almighty God, gracious Lord, we thank You for preserving Your holy church throughout the ages. For the gift of the blessed gospel we praise Your name. For the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection from the dead and life eternal in Christ, we thank You, loving Father. We treasure the rich heritage handed down from our fathers in the faith. Hear our prayer which we ask in the name of Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, through all eternity.  Amen.

Trunk or Treat!

Join us in the church parking lot from 5-7 pm for the annual Trunk or Treat event! As we started last year, we're only giving out non-food treats in recognition of the allergies some of our young guests might have.

Hymn for Reformation Day

Our God, We Are a Church Reformed
AZMON 8.6.8.6 ("O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing")
Our God, we are a church reformed,
A church reforming still:
We long to grow in your true Word,
And follow more your will.
How awesome is your sovereign rule;
You reign from heav'n above.
Yet you knelt down in Jesus Christ,
In sacrificial love.
In love, you bring your people here
And call your church to you,
That we may know salvation's joy
And serve in all we do.
You call us to community;
By faith our hearts are stirred.
In church, we seek an ordered life,
According to your Word.
As faithful stewards we find joy;
We need no rich display.
Lord, teach us all to use with care
The gifts you give each day.
The world makes gods of lesser things,
And wrongly uses power;
So by your Spirit may we work
For justice every hour.
Tune: Carl Gotthilf Gläser (or Glaeser), 1829; in Lowell Mason's Modern Psalmody, 1839 ("O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing")  (MIDI)

Reformation Sunday at Stevi UMC

October is drawing to a close and with it comes cooler weather and clearer glimpses of St. Mary's Peak.
This morning the choir shared "Standing on the Promises" as their offering to God. Pastor Charles' sermon, "Satisfied," was taken from Mark 10:46-52. Flowers were placed on the communion table from yesterday's funeral service for Doloras Fryhling.
It was really exciting to see THIRTEEN children come forward to take part in Holy Moly, our children's ministry! It was also exciting to welcome four new members into our fellowship today: Dr. Janice Belcher, Karen & Lenny Johnson, and Julie Weindel.
Thanks this morning to: Amanda Hermes (Nursery), Carole Koval & Bev Schneider (Greeters/ushers), Dave Lockman (Praise music), Ava (Acolyte), Dean & joey Diers (Liturgists), Cammie Edgar (power point), Julie Ludington (Pianist), Brenda Bolton (Choir), Dean Diers (children's lessons), Dean Diers & Don Nelson (Offering counters), and Carol Gragg (Fellowship).

Update on the 2019 Special General Conference

Court rules One Church Plan largely constitutional
Story by Linda Bloom, Assistant News Editor, United Methodist News Service

A review of possible plans for the future direction of The United Methodist Church found the One Church Plan to be largely constitutional, said a decision released Oct. 26 by the denomination’s top court.

In Decision 1366, which was unanimous, the United Methodist Judicial Council found more problems in the Traditional Plan petitions that would need to be addressed before that plan could pass a constitutional test. Read entire press release on UMNews.org

Statement from the Moderators of the Commission on a Way Forward on Judicial Council decisions
As Moderators of the Commission on a Way Forward, we are very grateful that the Council of Bishops asked for a declaratory decision in the constitutionality of the three plans contained in the Commission's report. This week during the Judicial Council oral hearings, the Commission was well represented by three of its members, Rev. Tom Berlin, Rev. Tom Lambrecht and Mrs. Pat Miller.

We thank the Judicial Council for their diligent work in analyzing the plans and giving guidance to the delegates so they can do their best work. Click here to read the full decision from the Judicial Council

Using the General Conference legislative process, individual Commission members will work alongside delegates to think through how all three plans might be amended based on the analysis of the Judicial Council.
Our prayer remains the same, that God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, will use the work of the Commission to maximize the presence of a United Methodist witness in as many places of the world as possible. We invite the church to continue to pray for our church as we seek to make disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world.

With the Peace of the Lord,
Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball and Bishop David Yemba

Statement from the Council of Bishops regarding the Judicial Council Decision

Story by the Rev. Dr. Maidstone Mulenga, Director of Communications, Council of Bishops, The United Methodist Church

In service to the delegates of the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference, the Council of Bishops asked for a declaratory decision of the Judicial Council regarding the constitutionality of the three plans contained in the report of the Commission on a Way Forward.

In a unanimous decision, the Judicial Council raised questions regarding petitions in all three plans while finding the One Church Plan, the plan supported by the Council of Bishops, to be most in compliance with the Constitution of The United Methodist Church and the Traditional Plan to have significant constitutional problems. The Judicial Council said that they did not have jurisdiction over the Connectional Conference Plan. Read entire press release on Mountain Sky website

There are, I am sure, acres of undiscovered truth
about prayer in the Bible.
Prayer is the most unexplored area of the Christian life.
Prayer is the more powerful weapon of the Christian life.
Prayer is the most hell-feared battle in the Christian life.
Prayer is the most secret device of the Christian life.
Prayer is the most underestimated power in the
Christian life.
Prayer is the most untaught truth in the Christian life.
Prayer s the most demanding exercise in the
Christian life.
Prayer is the most neglected responsibility in the Christian life.
Prayer is the most conquering outreach in the
Christian life.
Prayer is the most opposed warfare in the Christian life.
Prayer is the most far-reaching ministry in the
Christian life.

A letter to the Mountain Sky Conference

From the Cabinet and the delegates to General Conference 2019

We write in a time when our denomination and nation feel helplessly divided. In political, social, and religious arenas we’ve seen mounting problems, and when we’ve sought leadership we’ve only found division. In times such as these we need leaders to come together, engage in authentic, grace-filled, challenging dialogue and present a path forward.

It is against this backdrop that we, the Mountain Sky Cabinet and General Conference Delegation, write to express our support for the One Church Model, as presented by the Commission on a Way Forward. We believe that the One Church Model is a reasonable compromise that aligns with our Wesleyan heritage, allowing us to live in unity without requiring uniformity, and allows for the least disruptions of vital ministries throughout the Mountain Sky Conference.

We, the people of the Mountain Sky Conference, know the value of unity even in the midst of disagreement; we've lived into this model for many years. Go to any UMC from Trinidad, CO to Columbia Falls, MT, from Wheatland, WY, to St. George, UT and you’re likely to find people living in community despite disagreement about any number of divisive issues. Despite these disagreements, United Methodists have welcomed, supported, and loved each other as they have lived out a shared mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our theological diversity has created increased empathy, conversation, and growth. It has helped us to live in community with each other thus making us better prepared to live in harmony with all of creation.

To be clear, the One Church Model is not perfect. The One Church Model does not completely live into the values of full inclusion for our LGBTQ sisters and brothers; instead, discriminatory practices are allowed to persist within the United Methodist Church. Although we support the One Church Model, we also reaffirm our continued commitment to further the cause of equity and justice for all of those who have been disenfranchised in our Church.

While we acknowledge these imperfections in the plan, we also recognize that the One Church Model provides a significant gift to our conference and the entire denomination: the ability to live in unity without requiring uniformity. The One Church Model invites us to be united across our difference – a difference found in almost every congregation. Unity is difficult but unity teaches us empathy; it challenges us to reconsider the preconceived notions we have about others and ourselves, to grow a deeper understanding of ourselves and others, and to practice loving our neighbor always.

In the interest of unity, we, the Mountain Sky Conference Cabinet and Delegation, offer our prayerful support for the One Church Model as it has been presented by the Commission on the Way Forward. Recognizing its significant challenges, we accept the invitation to live into better community and to increase our love and empathy for each other, and to grow together in the likeness of Christ. Further, as leaders of this conference, we commit ourselves to working diligently to support and serve the conference as it continues to strive to live into God’s vision of Beloved Community.

Grace and peace in the name of Jesus Christ,

Lay delegates and first alternates: Doug Palmer, Don McCammon, Kunle Taiwo, Harvey Tukutau, Peg Plimpton, and Margaret Hotze
Clergy delegates and first alternates: Tyler Amundson, Kent Ingram, Jeremy Scott, Brad Laurvick, Megan Armstrong, and Cathie Kelsey
MSC Cabinet: Bishop Karen Oliveto, Jeff Rainwater, Youngsook Kang, Margaret Gillikin, Paul Kottke, Marv Vose, Jan Witman, Tezenlo Thong, Deborah Christine, and Amy Gearhart

Hello all…

Advent Devotional and Quart Canning Jars…..sounds like a strange combination.   What do they have in common?

Cammie Edgar!    She was the first one to submit her written devotional already!   ….And she needs quart canning jars.

We need to start putting together the devotional in about 2 weeks so if you have not signed up please do so!  (Sign up outside the church office on the sign-up table.)
Please make sure you put the Name of Jesus you want to use so we have a nice variety and not all the same ones. Remember, a paragraph or two about what the name you picked means to you is all we need and the date you want it to be in the book.

Now about those quart jars….

The Edgars have canned 50 gallons and counting of their extraordinary Apple Cider!  (If you haven’t tasted it, it’s the best!) They need quart canning jars to finish the trees.  So if you have any extra quart canning jars around that you aren’t using, could you bring them in to Cammie this weekend?  She is canning a bunch of cider to sell at the Bazaar.

Thanks all!

Julie

Passing of Doloras Fryhling

With sadness the news came today that Doloras Fryhling passed this morning. Her funeral service will be here at the church on Saturday at 2 pm.
