A prayer for the New Year

"Take me into a new year, Gracious God. Help me to continue looking for meaning, seeking peace, praying for light, dancing for joy, working for justice, and singing your praise.

I go into the new year filled with expectations, a touch of worry, and a bundle of hope. I do not journey into the new year alone but with you as my guide, with a commitment to my disciplines, with a community of family, friends, and faith.

Take me into the new year, Creator of beauty and wonder. Bless me with the companionship of Jesus, and gift me with the guidance and power of the Spirit. Amen."

( Prayer by Larry James Peacock from Openings: A Daybook of Saints, Psalms, and Prayer)

Devotional for the Seventh Day of Christmas

Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine was written by Charles Wesley specifically for use by the early Methodist Societies during the Watch Night Service on New Year’s Eve.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come, let us use the grace divine, and all with one accord,
in a perpetual covenant join ourselves to Christ the Lord;
Give up ourselves, thru Jesus’ power, His name to glorify;
and promise, in this sacred hour, for God to live and die.
The covenant we this moment make be ever kept in mind;
we will no more our God forsake, or cast these words behind.
We never will throw off the fear of God who hears our vow;
and if Thou art well pleased to hear, come down and meet us now.
Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, let all our hearts receive,
present with Thy celestial host the peaceful answer give;
to each covenant the blood apply which takes our sins away,
and register our names on high and keep us to that day!
A Strong Year in Mission
2013 was an amazing year for the United Methodist engagement in God’s mission through the General Board of Global Ministries!  A few highlights:
  • We commissioned 53 new missionaries, including 31 young adults.
  • Received in excess of $6.5 million in designated contributions through the Advance in our first participation in the online Giving Tuesday in early December;
  • Responded with compassion to a typhoon in the Philippines, tornadoes in the United States, refugees in Syria, and the malaria and AIDS epidemics in Africa.
  • Strengthened ties with local churches and annual (regional) conferences in the U.S., including new Mission Celebration events and commissioning new missionaries in the annual conferences.
  • Welcomed and promoted a new ecumenical statement on mission and evangelism that emphasizes “mission from the margins,” a complement to our ongoing emphasis on ministry with the poor.
Devotional for the Sixth Day of Christmas
Work of Christmas Begins
When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the flocks, then the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry, to release the oppressed, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music with the heart…
And to radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say.
Then the work of Christmas begins.
Fifth Sunday sing-a-long
By Still Waters
Thanks to Clay Freeman, David Paul and Hazel Smith (piano) for leading us in this month's Fifth Sunday sing-a-long.  Hazel's friend, Anna Storkson, also shared her vocal talents in the singing of one of the carols.
A special treat was the appearance of "By Still Waters," A gospel bluegrass group from Hamilton.  They offered several pieces that combined wonderful vocals and some down-home country rhythms to produce a fun Christmas experience!
Thanks also to Trudy Freeman for orchestrating the fellowship time and to all those lovely folks who graciously provided some really wonderful refreshments.  Thanks be to God for "this good life" in the Bitterroot Valley!
Collect for The Holy Innocents
The Flight into Egypt by Giotto di Bondone (1304-06)
We remember today, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish your rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Devotional for the Fifth Day of Christmas
The Nave of Canterbury Cathedral
In 1170, on the Fifth Day of Christmas, four knights from the court of King Henry II burst into Canterbury Cathedral looking for Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. Just inside the cloister door, they murdered Becket, whose defense of the rights of the church had angered his one-time friend, the king.
Within three years, Thomas was canonized, and the shrine of St. Thomas of Canterbury was set to become one of the most popular destinations for pilgrims from all over Europe.
In his play, "Murder in the Cathedral," T. S. Eliot reconstructs from historical sources the Archbishop’s final sermon, preached in the cathedral on Christmas Day. It is a remarkable meditation on the meaning of Christmas, martyrdom, and the true meaning of "peace on earth."
The Fifth Day of Christmas, the anniversary of Becket’s death, is an opportunity to reflect on the broader meaning of Christmas by reading the Archbishop’s sermon.
Come and worship!!!
The message Sunday morning will be interwoven with singing of the Twelve Days of Christmas.  Come, celebrate with us on the Fifth Day of Christmas!!!
Devotional for the Fourth Day of Christmas
This Scripture reading has always given me "blessed assurance", encouragement and hope. I delight in the imagery of Jesus, Emmanuel, "God with us" – as the one who delivered the light of God’s love to a world in darkness. And when it was time to leave us, he declared that he would not leave us "orphaned." He said we would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide our steps and light our way.
A couple of weeks ago, I was reminded of it, as I was driving to work. Normally, I drive to work in the light of day. However, I was participating in some remote training with folks in a classroom setting in Bethesda, Maryland. Given our time difference, I had to begin the training day at 6:15 a.m. Consequently, I drove to work much earlier than I usually do.
I was driving in the darkest of darkness! I remember thinking that I didn’t like it at all. The car’s headlights lit up a path that was just ahead of me. I could not see anything outside their range of light. It was so dark. I struggled to see what was immediately ahead of me. I was really anxious about the possibility of "critters" stepping out in front of the car suddenly. I knew I would have no warning, because I could not see anything to my right or to my left.
I remember thinking, "I don’t like this at all!" I don’t want to be in the darkness! I want to be in the light! As soon as I thought this, I laughed to myself. Wow, that would be a great devotional! Well, a lot of prayer for traveling mercies was said on that trip that morning. Fortunately, I arrived without incident. I was very grateful, indeed!
Yes, I want to be a "child of the light!" It’s so true what that Scripture says: "If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you are going." I really do want to walk the way that Jesus taught us to walk. I want God’s love and light to shine through me. How about you?
Come and celebrate the season with a fun-filled evening of singing!!!
Devotional for the Third Day of Christmas
A Christmas Carol by G. K. Chesterton
The Christ-child lay on Mary's lap,
His hair was like a light.
(O weary, weary were the world,
But here is all aright.)
The Christ-child lay on Mary's breast
His hair was like a star.
(O stern and cunning are the kings,
But here the true hearts are.)
The Christ-child lay on Mary's heart,
His hair was like a fire.
(O weary, weary is the world,
But here the world's desire.)
The Christ-child stood on Mary's knee,
His hair was like a crown,
And all the flowers looked up at Him,
And all the stars looked down
Devotional for the Second Day of Christmas
December 26th is observed by the Church as the Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian faith.
1. Good King Wenceslas look'd out, On the Feast of Stephen; When the snow lay round about, Deep, and crisp, and even: Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gath'ring winter fuel.
2. "Hither page and stand by me, If thou know'st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?" "Sire, he lives a good league hence. Underneath the mountain; Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes' fountain."
3. "Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, Bring me pine-logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither." Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together; Through the rude winds wild lament, And the bitter weather.
4. "Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know now how, I can go no longer." "Mark my footsteps, good my page; Tread thou in them boldly; Thou shalt find the winter's rage Freeze thy blood less coldly."
5. In his master's steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod Which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christian folk, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.
Devotional for the First Day of Christmas, Dec. 25
Nativity Window - Hereford Cathedral, England
Nativity
Immensity cloistered in thy dear womb,
Now leaves His well-belov'd imprisonment,
There He hath made Himself to His intent
Weak enough, now into the world to come;
But O, for thee, for Him, hath the inn no room?
Yet lay Him in this stall, and from the Orient,
Stars and wise men will travel to prevent
The effect of Herod's jealous general doom.
Seest thou, my soul, with thy faith's eyes, how He
Which fills all place, yet none holds Him, doth lie?
Was not His pity towards thee wondrous high,
That would have need to be pitied by thee?
Kiss Him, and with Him into Egypt go,
With His kind mother, who partakes thy woe.
A prayer for Christmas Eve
Star of Bethlehem quilt
Tonight O God, in the midst of darkness you came and shone a Holy Light.  The Light that You sent in Your Son, was so bright, that nothing not even His impending death could dampen the reality of Christmas!  Tonight, may His light continue to shine through us and to the world who sees the light of Jesus shining in our homes through our hearts.  In Christmas’ love we pray.  Amen!
We gathered on a chilly evening in the Bitterroot Valley for our Christmas Eve service. Like Christians from around the world, we were blessed to have so many with whom we could share the worship of the Nativity of the Lord.
Christmas Eve, 1784
The Christmas Conference is the name given to the conference at which the Methodist Episcopal Church in America was formally organized.  It was an historic founding conference of the newly independent Methodists within the United States held just after the American Revolution.  Eighty-three preachers were entitled to membership; sixty of them were able to arrive for the conference.
The conference began on December 24, 1784, and lasted until January 2 or 3, 1785, at the Lovely Lane Chapel in Baltimore, Maryland.   Because of meeting through the Christmas period, the conference has traditionally been called the Christmas Conference.  It was at this conference that John Wesley's instructions for the new church were received and approved.
Thomas Coke was received as general superintendent. Francis Asbury, designated as a general superintendent by Wesley, was elected to the office by the ministers present and consecrated. Ministers were ordained, and ministerial appointments to churches and circuits were made.   The initial policies for the new church were chosen.   The founding date of 1784 for The United Methodist Church comes from this meeting of the Christmas Conference.
Advent Devotional for Christmas Eve
A Christmas Acrostic of Friendship and Love
Christmas time brings joyous greetings, Lots of toys and choirs singing; Although the thrills of gifts, and light grand, Yule time speaks of God’s mighty hand.
And first, we see a heavenly star shining bright Near a hewn-rock stable, a peaceful sight. Do we each personally know the love born that night?
Truly, that love of God given us there, Reaches throughout history, for us to share Until all mankind can join in love, Doing the will of our Father above. Yes, through Christ’s atonement, we are aware.
Friendships renewed, gifts for loved ones, all; Relatives brought closer, near hearth, near hall. Everything seems to glow with warmth and cheer, Especially good wishes for a beautiful New Year. May these be ours, with true peace as their shawl. And finally, may each one us be awed Not by the tinsel, but the bright Love of God!
Advent Devotional for December 23rd
Joseph in a Dream by Rembrandt van Rijn
"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." - Mahatma Gandhi
Each morning when I read from my devotional it brings me peace, love and direction for the day. In the same way are words and actions throughout the day that may make a difference in other’s lives. I have a choice of being grumpy, sad, wrapped up in self or by being open-minded, kind, and a friendly person.
I’m reminded to listen to God as I listen to others. We need his direction as we respond to others. We need to be a channel of Christ’s love. We are helped by the Spirit inside us to respond with love to other’s needs.
