Devotional for the First Sunday of Advent

December 1stFirst Sunday of Advent

"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people."

Like many of you, one of my all-time favorite Advent experiences is watching the “Charlie Brown Christmas special.”  Many can relate to Charlie Brown’s search for the “real meaning of Christmas.”

These four weeks that we observe the time of “Advent” mark a holy time.  It is a time when we, like Charlie Brown, are in search of the true meaning of Christmas.

This is a time when we can prepare our hearts and minds for the Christmas Day celebration.  The word “advent” comes from a Latin term for “coming.”  It refers to the first and second comings of Jesus Christ, in the senses of Savior and Judge, respectively.  At this time of year, we celebrate both the blessing of the birth of Christ and our belief in his eventual return.

It’s a time to get excited, to count down and to spend time doing the things that matter the most to us.  Reading this Advent devotional that was lovingly prepared by members and friends of our church family is one great way to do just that!  I am so glad we are on this journey together!  Shalom!
