A Strong Year in Mission

2013 was an amazing year for the United Methodist engagement in God’s mission through the General Board of Global Ministries!  A few highlights:

  • We commissioned 53 new missionaries, including 31 young adults.
  • Received in excess of $6.5 million in designated contributions through the Advance in our first participation in the online Giving Tuesday in early December;
  • Responded with compassion to a typhoon in the Philippines, tornadoes in the United States, refugees in Syria, and the malaria and AIDS epidemics in Africa.
  • Strengthened ties with local churches and annual (regional) conferences in the U.S., including new Mission Celebration events and commissioning new missionaries in the annual conferences.
  • Welcomed and promoted a new ecumenical statement on mission and evangelism that emphasizes “mission from the margins,” a complement to our ongoing emphasis on ministry with the poor.
