Advent Devotional for December 13th

Several years ago, I was working at my job on Christmas Eve. As a nurse in a small rural hospital, we nurses were "generalists" and took care of all types of patients. In the early afternoon, an elderly woman was admitted. She had family come for the holidays, and in her excitement at seeing them, suffered a severe stroke. Several hours later, she passed away, surrounded by loving family and friends.

A short while later, a young woman was admitted in labor, and after a few hours, gave birth to her first baby, a healthy baby boy. They too, were surrounded by loving family and friends. Of course, I thought of the baby Jesus, whose birth we would be celebrating shortly, and how our faith and belief in Jesus eases our painful times and enhances our joyful ones.

This day was a microcosm of life, its joys and sorrows.

My wish for all of us is that we will be surrounded by loving family and friends through all the joys and sorrows of life, and how as a church, we help to achieve this goal.
