United Methodist Women partner organization featured in documentary on child trafficking in the U.S.

The girl in the motel room is 17. She says she’s been “in the life” since she was 13. But she is not ready to leave the only life she knows — that of a child trafficked for sex.
Sasha Ray was pimped out of the back of a barbershop. She was luckier. She was able to leave. She reached out to an advocate for sex trafficking victims, Lisa C. Williams, and ended up getting the love that everyone deserves.
These girls, Lisa Williams, and many others, are featured in the CNN documentary Children for Sale: The Fight to End Human Trafficking. The CNN Special Report takes a close look at today’s modern day slavery — the sex-trafficking of children in America.
As tragic as human trafficking is, awareness is being raised. This documentary is just one part of CNN’s larger Freedom Project, which investigates human trafficking and how best to put an end to this trade in human life. And there are people like Lisa Williams, who are making an enormous difference in many lives.
Williams is the founder of Living Water Center, a safe house and rehabilitation facility in Atlanta for victims of human trafficking. Living Water is part of the organization Circle of Friends, which serves to educate and empower women to make a difference in other women’s and girls’ lives. Circle of Friends is a collaborator of United Methodist Women, and Williams herself often works with United Methodist Women, holding workshops and helping to train our human trafficking team.
Rachel's Law
With the help of women like Williams, the United Methodist Women human trafficking team has been working tirelessly on behalf of trafficking victims. One recent effort was advocating for the passage of anti-trafficking laws. Senate Bill 8, known as Rachel's Law and the Safe Harbor Law, was signed in Georgia earlier this year. The laws determine how still-to-be-approved funds would be allocated for victims of child prostitution, and state that sexually exploited youths are to be treated as victims and can no longer be charged with prostitution. Williams, United Methodist Women President Yvette Richards, our human trafficking team, and Georgia United Methodist Women, along with many others, worked tirelessly for the passing of the laws.
