Devotional for December 20

El Greco
                                          Messiah

The Messiah was used to denote the savior of the Jewish people.  Since the advent of Jesus, it has been used for Jesus as the “savior of mankind.”

To me, Messiah, speaks of the oratorio written by Handel more than 250 years ago and still well loved by many of us.  It is the piece of music associated with Christmas most clearly in my mind and with waiting for the rest of the family to finish choir rehearsal while I read the score.

The other name I've always loved is "Prince of Peace" - from Isaiah 9:6 and used in The Messiah as well as in the New Testament.  Peace in our world is not always easy to find without the help of our Lord.
