Advent Devotional - December 5

"Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace and good will to men [and women]." - Luke 2:14

What a wonderful sentiment the angels expressed to humble shepherds in the field at Jesus' birth. Unfortunately, in these troubled times we seem to have missed the message altogether.

As we approach the season of celebration of this glorious event during these troubled times we dare not forget the lesson Jesus taught us: "Love thy neighbor as thyself."

The gospels don't qualify this statement by saying, "Love thy neighbor as thyself only if they are the same skin color, nationality, speak the same language or vote the same as you do." It just says, "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Period! That's really hard when the neighbor doesn't love you back, isn't it? Boundary disputes, harsh words, litigation, and physical aggression are more common than ever and neighbors bearing gifts and kind greetings are in short supply.

It would be wonderful if Peace on Earth were the goal of everyone on our beautiful planet and good will from men towards women and towards men was universal. If we treated each other with respect and honor and all people actually showed love for one another then God would be truly glorified.
